When the Painting Changes Direction: Trusting the Unknown Layer

There is a moment in every painting when certainty loosens its grip. What began as intention starts to soften and the work begins to speak back. A colour shifts what was planned. A form dissolves into something more honest. The painting stops being something I am making and becomes something I am listening to.
Sometimes I notice resistance here. A tightening. A desire to return to the original plan. But when I stay with it, something shifts. The painting opens. It breathes differently. It becomes less about outcome and more about relationship.
In these moments I am reminded that the studio is not only a place of making but a place of listening. Each layer carries memory. Each interruption holds information. Nothing is wasted, even what feels uncertain.
